DEFORESTATION - PAPER ART | BOOK BINDING Thousands of acres of forest are being cut down to make room for palm oil plantations in Borneo, and it’s having a devastating effect on the environment, particularly the orang-utans. A lot of locals that are involved in the deforestation are unaware of the disastrous consequences that they’re having an impact on, they’re uneducated and misinformed. So I asked myself: How could you explain the issue of deforestation to the locals of Borneo who are unable to understand our language? What I have created is a reflection of the manifesto in every way, shape, and form. The interchanging, abstract, angular pages represent futurist artwork and the projected ideas of how men’s clothing ‘should’ have been looking in 1914. The type weight and size is used to convey the meanings of the many elaborate word choices and connotations. Our Concept is inclusive of everyone on the graphic design course. It may look like a lot, but actually it’s pretty simple. We’re ‘setting the tone’ before the big event! The swatch cards are a play on the idea of Pantone swatches, the cards will feature each student attending the exhibition. After researching the current campaigns tackling similar things, I noticed that they all followed the same aesthetic that could often be off putting and intimidating. I wanted to create one that would be approachable and effective. I liked the idea of having physical object being able to tell the story of someone who is unable to. I love the work of Grayson Perry and David Shrigley, they have the amazing ability of being able to tell stories through objects. I knew, if I were to create a campaign or an organisation, I wanted it to stand out against the classic domestic abuse campaigns we currently see, I feel as if we have been desensitised to the violence in them and the directness of them. This is the question that sparked this collaborative project. We saw a link between war veterans and John Lewis, both national treasures, yet one provides homes, and the other is in need of them. John Lewis are widely known for their high quality products and expensive furnishings - but most of all: turning a house into a home. We propose to expand the John Lewis Fundraiser to not only those who have directly influenced the brand but to those who have given us so much more as a country. When veterans return from war, even though they may have a house to come back to, they are at huge risk of homelessness. They have been separated from civilisation and frequently struggle with ‘normal life’ things such as money management, maintaining relationships, and feeling like they fit in. Our idea is to build a festival surrounding this theory - as it is something extremely relevant right now, as we need to act if we want to pause the death of our planet. Creating a festival that ‘nudges’ people in the right direction ever so slightly without them even noticing or going out of their way for - will only positively promote these easy simple steps to change behaviours and make a huge positive impact overall. This would be a revolutionary festival that’ll not only show how festivals can be more sustainable, but how any lifestyle can and should be! EXAMPLES OF HOW NUDGE WILL TACKLE THE MAIN PROBLEMS AT FESTIVALS: Food: By only offering tasty vegan and vegetarian food (*PALM FREE - always) we are taking the meat option away but replacing it with fresh yummy goodness that people can easily cook up themselves at home! Plastic: Only using biodegradable plastic alternatives. Tents: Using award winning Kartents that’ll be set up instead of regular tents that get left behind and end up in landfill. Kartents can be recycled and turned into something new! We can also print our own designs onto them, which means getting creative, hosting competitions and sponsoring good, down to earth brands! Transport: Ideally, there would be no parking available at Nudge - this is because we would have a 100% reliable coach system that aims to reduce CO2 emissions. But so much of this waste is unnecessary, particularly the fruit and veg that is considered too ‘ugly’ for shops shelves; it is discarded into landfill before we even get a chance to purchase the goods. Who decides what is too fat? too juicy? not the right colour? To tackle the issue of food waste, we figured that Lush would be an ideal platform; Lush tackle many issues, from naked packaging to fighting animal testing, yet they don’t work with food waste. We wanted to get involved with a brand that has made us both feel good - whilst challenging conventional beauty. Lush encapsulates everything we believe a brand should be - and even though they are incredibly inclusive, it wouldn’t be a bad thing to include real skin that hasn’t had it easy. Furthermore, we aspire to use our creativity for good. We are using the social and environmental issue of food waste as a platform to change behaviour and shift mindsets. Dartmoor zoo isn’t your normal zoo, it has a much more wild feel to it, the setting is beautiful, especially when all of the flowers are blooming. I wanted to capture this wild aspect within the design. August (the main character) was born with a facial deformity, this is what the book is based around. I wanted my cover to reflect the fact that August’s family have the foundations of a regular family, yet there is something different about them, which is why, when you look closer, August is turned around and looking into the sky. Written in the stars is ‘Wonder’.
